Pat Williams, who serves as the senior vice president of the Orlando Magic, has been diagnosed with a relatively unknown form of cancer called “multiple myeloma.”
While Williams will be able to receive treatment for the disease -- and reportedly has a 70 to 75 percent chance of remission -- it remains as one that isn’t completely curable.
Multiple myeloma is a condition where plasma cells tend to grow at an alarming rate in the bone marrow and end up forming tumors in the solid bone. This, in turn, makes it difficult for bone marrow to make red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
As the tumors grow, the disease can become more and more painful. In the event that the spine becomes impacted, numbness and paralysis have been known to occur.
Despite the fact that the disease may come with certain specific symptoms, Williams didn’t catch it until his yearly physical.
Now, the 70-year-old Magic VP is getting two weekly chemotherapy treatments.
Williams’ doctor has come out and said that Williams is handling everything admirably, and that other than a few particular bouts with fatigue, will likely live a completely normal life.
