NBA and Los Angeles fans alike can rest easy -- basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says he’s now officially cancer free.

By way of his Twitter account, the highly-respected hoops great announced that he is finally free and clear of the chronic myeloid leukemia that he has been treating for over a year.

“I am 100 percent cancer-free!!” he Tweeted.

“last blood test looked great. Feeling great.”

Abdul-Jabbar originally revealed his illness in an interview with ABC News.

The rare bone marrow cancer is a frightening diagnosis for anyone that receives it, however, the Lakers legend battled through it with champion-like courage and an unwavering positive attitude.

Admitting that when he originally got the disease he considered it a death sentence in that ABC interview, the 62-year-old Abdul-Jabbar described his reaction to finding out he had chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia, or PH+CML.

“I heard the word ‘leukemia,’ and I thought this was definitely a death sentence.”

Shortly thereafter, though, the hoops great took the bull by the horns.

“If I can do this as I’m told to do this as I’m told to do it, I can manage this,” he said.

Abdul-Jabbar played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles during a storied career that lasted over 24 years. He retired as, and remains to this day, the league’s all-time leader in points, minutes, field goals, field goal attempts and All-Star game selections.
