Stem cell transplant survivors have more chronic health problems

blood-stem-cells.jpg

As if it weren't enough to endure a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as a last line treatment for various subtypes of lymphoma or leukemia, a new study indicates that two thirds of these survivors report having chronic health problems later in life, and they are almost four times more likely to experience them than their siblings who don't have cancer.

These problems include mild health issues such as high blood pressure or issues with hearing to life-threatening health problems such as cardiovascular disease or secondary cancers.
