Baseball Legend Tony Gwynn has lost his battle with cancer. He was 54 years old.
The intensely private Gwynn first revealed he had parotid cancer in 2010.
Parotid cancer is a cancer that begins in one or both of the parotid glands, the largest of the salivary glands. These glands make saliva and release it into the mouth.
Gwynn spent 20 years in Major League Baseball before retiring to coach at his alma mater, San Diego State. Back in April it was reported that his coaching days were in doubt due to his need for more cancer treatment.
Tony Gwynn retired from Major League Baseball with 3,141 hits and an astonishing .338 batting average. His .338 was the best career BA since 1939. He reached the majors in 1982, one year after he was drafted from San Diego State University. Never known as a power hitter, Gwynn was known as a singles hitter who could hit the ball in any direction. He was a 15 time All-Star, and his strike out rate was amazing: In almost 9,300 at-bats, Gwynn struck out just 434 times.
Gwynn was inducted in the Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2007, after scoring one of the highest voting percentages on voter ballots ever at over 97 percent.
