In final draft guidance, the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is saying it does not recommend Jevtana (cabazitaxel) made by Sanofi, for use in combination with prednisone as a second-line treatment for prostate cancer, meaning that the UK's national health system will likely not pay for it, a cost that runs to about £22,200 per patient.
NICE uses an independent appraisal committee for its draft guidance, and in this case the committee felt that despite the proven efficacy of extending life in some prostate cancer patients, that the drug's many side effects severely impacted quality of life beyond what is considered acceptable.
