Teen Tanning Could Lead to Cancer

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, teenagers and young adults should be banned from tanning salons in order to prevent skin cancer.

In a statement on Monday, the United States’ largest group of pediatric doctors noted that spending time in tanning salons increased the chances of melanoma. Melanoma, of course, is recognized as the most aggressive and lethal form of skin cancer. Further, melanoma also happens to be the second leading type of cancer for women in their 20s.

The lead author of this study, Dr. Sophie Balk of Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, had this to say on the matter:

"I would try and encourage people to love the skin they're in," Balk told AOL News. On top of that, she and her colleagues are pushing for legislation that would bar teenagers under the age of 18 from using the tanning salons.

As per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 8,500 Americans each year die from melanoma.

The American Medical Association and American Academy of Dermatology support such a ban as well.
