13 Foods That Fight Cancer Growth

There are lots of so-called “Superfoods” that are known for their cancer-prevention properties, but what if you already have cancer? A new study by researchers at Washington State University has found more than 40 plant-based compounds that can slow the spread of cancer.

The quick spreading of cancer is almost always the cause of fatalities in cancer patients. Some foods seem to be increasing the speed of attack, while others can turn on genes that slow down the rate of growth.

Gary Meadows, professor at Washington State, said “We’re always looking for a magic bullet. Well, there’s lots of magic bullets out there in what we eat and associated with out lifestyle. We just need to take advantage of those. And they can work together.”

Meadows based the study of the simple logic of controlling the spread of cancer rather than attacking the tumor. He focused on genes that can suppress the spread, or metastasis, of cancer cells. These “metastasis suppressor” genes can be turned on or off by certain nutrients.

The following foods may play a role in inhibiting cancer growth.

- Curry
- Tomatoes
- Pomegranates
- Eggs
- Salmon
- Mushrooms
- Sardines
- Kale
- Green Tea
- Soy
- Blueberries
- Broccoli
- Cranberries

Meadows claims that “these epigenetic mechanisms are influences by what you eat. That may also be related to how the metastasis suppressor genes are being regulated. That’s a very new area of research that has largely not been very well explored in terms of diet and nutrition.”

These foods are not meant to be a cure for cancer, but may slow it’s spread. Paired with a cancer treatment like chemotherapy or radiation, they may lead to a higher survival rate.
