AICR 2011: Too much sitting can raise cancer risk

According to a statement issued at the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) annual conference, as many as 100,000 cancers each year can be linked to too much sitting.

Specifically, the AICR statement said that these cancer cases could possibly be avoided by sitting around less and being active more—not in terms of exercise per se, but in terms of breaking up one's hours of either sitting at a desk or sitting in front of the television and taking a brisk walk or finding some other form of moderate activity.

Said AICR spokesperson Dr. Alice Bender, "Every day, we're each given numerous opportunities to be active and protect ourselves from cancer ... We need to start thinking in terms of make time and break time."

This even applies to people who are getting the recommended 30 minutes or so of moderate physical activity each day and appears to have little to nothing to do with body weight. In fact, researchers are saying that even a minute or two of activity for every hour that one is sitting will go a long way towards preventing certain cancers, including some breast and colon cancers.
