Cancer-Killing Virus Lacks Funding For Trials

testtubeswooo

Researchers in Sweden have discovered a virus that has the potential to eliminate many cancers, including the type that killed Steve Jobs (neuroendocrine tumors). In lab mice, the virus virtually melted tumors with very few side effects. However, there are currently no plans to test the virus on humans.

Since 2010 the virus, Ad5[CgA-E1A-miR122]PTD (it’s full scientific name), has been kept in a mini freezer in Sweden and has no plans to be tested on humans.

The virus is cheap to produce, exquisitely precise and leaves the patient with only mild, flu-like symptoms. Professor Magnus Essand of the Uppsala University claims “It is amazing, it’s better than anything else. Tumor cell lines that are resistant to every other drug, it kills them in these animals.”

However, Essand currently lacks the necessary funding to test the virus on human patients. Patients fly into the Uppsala University Hospital from all over the world, begging Professor Essand for the virus, but the oncologists are not permitted by law to allow anyone to use the virus.

Due to the nature of cancer cells being resistant to dying, if a suitable virus infects a cancer cell, it could replicate inside it uncontrollably until the cell tears apart and the virus spreads to other cells.

In a way, the virus is a cancer for cancer.

This is no new discovery; since the 1880s doctors have known that some viral infections can cause dramatic reductions in tumors. In the 1990s, scientists learned how to enhance the effect to kill cancer cells with relatively little effect on the patient.

So why isn’t the virus being used to save lives? It would cost Professer Essand millions of dollars to just get the paperwork started for clinical trials. The cost of the trial itself would be much more than that.

One reporter asked Essand “If Calvin Klein or Elton John or… Paris Hilton stumped up a million, could they have the virus named after them?” to which he replied, “Why not? We can make an even better one for two million.”
