On Monday, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that 9/11 first responders along with survivors exposed to the toxic compounds from the smoldering wreckage from the destruction caused on September 11 will be covered for cancer treatment under the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

President Obama signed the act into law on 2 January 2011. The act covers survivors and responders from both sites—New York City and Washington DC.

Said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, "We have urged from the very beginning that the decision whether or not to include cancer be based on science … and [this decision] will continue to ensure that those who have become ill due to the heinous attacks on 9/11 get the medical care they need and deserve."

The act will cover dozens of cancers, including breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, leukemia and all childhood cancers in addition to already covering respiratory diseases, mental disorders and musculoskeletal conditions.

It is estimated that sicknesses and developed diseases as consequences of 9/11 have caused the deaths of at least another 1,000 people.
