According to research appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, solid organ transplant patients face double the risk of developing cancer compared to the rest of the population.
Transplant patients receiving kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs have been shown to experience twice the incidence of cancer, with the most common cancer appearing among this cohort being Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Researchers out of the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, MD., examined the records of over 175,000 transplant patients, with over 60 percent of them being men. The most commonly transplanted organ was the kidney, accounting for three-fifths of the cases.
Unfortunately, researchers could only speculate on why cancer incidence is higher among this patient population.
