Young UK Girl Dies Before She Can Get Treatment in US

niamh curry.jpg

Niamh Curry, a five year old girl from Northamptonshire whose fundraising campaign touched hundreds of thousands of people all over the world, has died of aggressive neuroblastoma, despite extraordinary efforts on the part of her family to raise £300,000 for a treatment that may have saved or extended her life from the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

Curry made headlines when her family went public with a vigorous fundraising campaign to raise the £450,000 needed to get her to the famous Philadelphia hospital for treatment. The online campaign was an outright success, raising two-thirds of the money needed in a very short time--a span of a handful of months--but it wouldn't be in time, as she has succumbed to the disease, according to the BBC.

Curry was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2010 at the age of three.

She underwent a number of treatments, ranging from drugs to chemotherapy regimens to radiation treatments to surgery to remove tumors.

Despite the aggressive course of treatment, Niamh's neuroblastoma was especially aggressive and had returned by the end of 2011.

That's when her family launched the online campaign to get her to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, although it is unclear what treatment was being offered there.
