30 year-old Sarah Best of Warwickshire in the United Kingdom gave birth to a healthy 4 lb., 10 oz baby boy literally hours after receiving her final anti-cancer treatment. In doing so, she became the first known woman from the UK and just the 8th known woman in the world to undergo such anti-cancer treatment and give birth to a healthy child.
Best had a subtype of mouth cancer. She first underwent a groundbreaking surgery to remove the tumor at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) in England. That treatment was followed by six weeks of adjuvant chemotherapy and then 32 days of radiotherapy.
She went into labor on the final day of radiotherapy.
