Cancer fundraiser is personal for pro hockey goalie

On 15 April 2012, the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Heat will not only have played the last game of their regular season, they will also hold their annual cancer fundraiser, "Cuts for the Cure," in which players and fans shave their heads to raise money and awareness.

The fundraiser is especially close to the team's starting goaltender Leland Irving.

A first round draft pick of the NHL's Calgary Flames, when Irving was seven he was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma--a cancer that affects the muscles where they attach to the bone.

Irving required 13 months of chemotherapy treatments. He has been cancer-free ever since, but he never forgets what he went through and is looking forward to the event.

"Anything you can do to promote cancer awareness, cancer research or funding for kids cancer camps -– it’s a big part of my life and I appreciated it when I was going through my treatments. To have kids cancer camp to go to in the summer is something I still talk about. I just hope for kids to be able to enjoy that nowadays."
