Bavituximab underperforming against non small cell lung cancer

Biopharmaceutical company Peregrine's experimental cancer treatment bavituximab is not performing well in clinical trials, according to a story filed by Reuters.

Bavituximab, which the company is testing as an anti-cancer therapy against a number of solid tumor cancers including pancreatic cancer, reported that a trial testing the treatment against standard therapies in the frontline treatment of non-small cell lung cancer is not meeting one of its secondary endpoints: progression free survival.

The trial has two arms. One group is receiving bavituximab plus carboplatin and paclitaxel, and the other group has patients receiving carboplatin and paclitaxel only.

According to an independent review of the data, bavituximab plus carboplatin and paclitaxel's median progression free survival time was 6.7 months, compared to a median progression free survival time of 6.4 months in patients receiving only the standard therapy. Previously the company had claimed that PFS was 5.8 months compared to 4.6 months with standard therapy.

Overall survival data will be reported later in the year.
