Racial, economic disparities evident in ovarian cancer treatment

Societygynecologiconcology.jpg

According to findings to be presented at this year's Society of Gynecologic Oncology meeting, serious racial and economic disparities exist within the treatment of ovarian cancer in the United States.

Researchers examined the records of over 47,000 women treated for ovarian cancer between 1998 and 2002. Shockingly, only 44 percent of those women received treatment that fell within the guidelines established by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, widely considered standards of care in oncology.

Women not receiving NCCN-guideline standards of care were more likely to be black women, women on Medicare, uninsured women, and women of lower socioeconomic status compared to other women.

Among women who did receive the standard of care for ovarian cancer, black women nonetheless had a lower five-year survival rate (33 percent) than white women (41 percent).
