Opening day brawl leads to cancer discovery in official

football poster.jpg

On September 11, 2011 during an NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens, a fight broke out. As veteran on-field official Tony Corrente attempted to break it up, he was knocked to the turf, hitting both his head and back.

Corrente began taking motrin for the pain, but within days he found that he was coughing up blood. A trip to an ear, nose and throat specialist found the cause: a tumor in his throat.

Corrente credits the decision to take a blood thinner (motrin) and not an analgesic (Tylenol) for his pain as one of the reasons his cancer was discovered early, and even goes as far as telling Peter King of Sports Illustrated that getting flattened in the brawl saved his life.

Corrente underwent chemotherapy and radiation in October and November, but was able to return to the field to help officiate the recent playoff game in New Orleans between the Saints and the Lions, although because of ongoing radiation, Corrente will miss the rest of the playoffs.

Nonetheless, his prognosis (as well as the prognosis in many similar cases of throat cancer) is good, and his doctors seem confident that he'll be back on the field for next year's NFL season.
