Is a PET Scan the only way to detect lung cancer?

Chest X-rays can sometimes

Chest X-rays can sometimes detect lung cancer in smokers. Spiral CT scanning can sometimes detect it as well. However right now there aren't any blood tests that can detect it; for the most part, detection requires a scan along with a clinical examination, followed by a biopsy, etc.
